Tras reanudarse, Ortiz se fue de rodillas al suelo prácticamente solo, pero el árbitro lo consideró caída.
Ortiz se mostró recuperado en el tercer asalto. El cubano era el que llevaba el peso de las acciones dominando con su jab. Sin embargo, Ruiz era el que metía los mejores golpes con sus explosivas combinaciones.
En el séptimo asalto, el cubano volvió a ser derribado en los últimos segundos del asalto, tras ser conectado con una gran derecha.

Ruiz dejaba llevar el peso del combate al cubano, peleando a la defensiva y respondiendo con rápidas contras.
Con el paso de los asaltos, el ojo izquierdo del cubano se fue cerrando. Mientras Ruiz tenía hinchado los pómulos.
Ortiz lo intentó en todo momento, pero sus golpes apenas dañaban al mexicano que los asimilaba muy bien, mientras que los golpes de Ruiz hacían mucho daño al cubano.
El combate acabó en las tarjetas dando la victoria a Ruiz por 113-112, 114-111 y 114-111.
Con esta victoria, Ruiz se convierte en el retador obligatorio de Tyson Fury. Ortiz, por el contrario, a sus 44 años debería plantearse el retiro.
